FoKCC’s Coordinated Management of Meaning (CMM) Workshop: A Review

Here we review our workshop held in January 2024, titled ‘Every moment is a Starting Point: Personal and Professional Connections to CMM’.

An FoKCC Workshop presented by Chris Hannah, Hazel Hyslop, Chandra O’Connor, Mike O’Connor.

FoKCC Core group members were invited to review recorded material from the 2021 AFT/KCC Conference. The presenters reviewed the material, were inspired by what they saw and developed an idea for a Coordinated Management of Meaning (CMM) workshop. Our aim was to share stories of the influence of CMM in our personal and professional lives and create a space for those at all stages of their CMM journey to share their experience of the theory in practice.  We wanted to embody the spirit of KCC which was about conversation, love, and relationship.

We wanted to demystify the approach – especially for those new to the ideas. Rather than us “teaching” CMM we made space for participants to share lived experience of CMM though conversation, making their own connections. We used the metaphor of ‘journey’ with CMM making sense of past present and future experiences.

We were surprised and honoured that Vernon Cronen signed up for the workshop and got up very early to join us. Having been so involved in the early introduction to CMM at KCC he was keen to discover how the ideas had evolved and how CMM is used in different contexts. We had the pleasure of hearing his reflections about this at the end of the workshop.

There were about 50 attendees and overall feedback was positive with 20 participants interested in attending further sessions on a CMM theme.
